Three Steps to Start Networking

We know it can feel overwhelming to think about building a professional network. That’s why we created this guide to make the process a little less daunting.

Step 1 - Establish Your Why

Why do you want to start networking again?

Are you curious about exploring different organizations, eager and ready for a significant career change, or simply interested in learning more about the various roles that are available

Understanding your motivation or your why is an important first step in this process!

Step 2 - Find Connections

Reconnect with people you haven’t spoken to in a while, such as individuals from school, former coworkers, or even a family friend you’ve lost touch with over the years.

Seek out “lateral connections” at your current job, or consider reaching out to people who are at the same job level as you. This could include individuals on your very own team or others across the organization who are working in a role similar to yours.

Additionally, take the time to identify different organizations that spark your interest and look for people in roles there that align with your career aspirations and professional goals. Engaging with these connections can lead to new opportunities and valuable insights.

Step 3 - Send an Email or LinkedIn Message to Connect

Sending a hello message is a crucial first step in establishing a new professional relationship. If you’re unsure what to say, no worries! We’ve made this template that you can copy and adjust to your specific needs:

Subject: Finding Time to Connect

Dear [Insert Name],

I’m [introduce yourself and establish familiarity - this could be briefly explaining how you came across the connection’s page. If you have no connections, express interest in their work and establish how their accomplishments align with your goals.]

I would love to chat with you and learn more about your role and [insert a specific aspect of their experience. This could be about their career journey or their expertise. The more specific you are here, the better. Show that you did your homework!]

Please let me know what dates and times you are available in the coming weeks for a 20 minute chat. I’m happy to be flexible and appreciate your time.

Thank you,
