Eid Al-Fitr 101

What is Eid Al-Fitr?

Eid al-Fitr is a holiday that marks the end of the Holy month of Ramadan. Celebrations last up to three days!

How is Eid Al-Fitr Celebrated?

Eid Al-Fitr is commemorated by a morning prayer service on the first day of the holiday. In celebration, Muslims dress in their best clothes, exchange gifts, eat sweets, gather with family and friends, and distribute Zakat (charity) to those in need.

How Can I Support My Muslim Colleagues on Eid Al-Fitr?

  • As Eid Al-Fitr falls on a different date every year, time-off requests will differ annually. Be understanding and inclusive of colleagues who will need time off to celebrate with family during the three day holiday and may not be able to complete work-related requests during this period.

  • Include a acknowledgement of Eid Al-Fitr and those observing via email, newsletters, social media, or work communications!

  • Encourage Eid Al-Fitr related celebrations in the workplace! This could include allowing Muslims to decorate their professional spaces or putting a poster up marking the celebration

  • With them a blessed Eid Mubarak! This is the term Muslims use as a greeting during Eid celebrations, with the literal translation being “Blessed festival/feast”
