3 Steps to Start Networking
Establish your “Why”
Why do you want to start networking again? Curious about different organizations, ready for a career change, just want to learn more about different roles? Knowing your why is an important first step!
Find Connections
Reconnect with people you haven’t spoken to in a while - people from school, old coworkers, a family friend etc.
Seek out “lateral connections” at your current job, or people at the same job level. It could be people on your very team, or people across the organization working with a similar role as you
Find different organizations that interest you and people in roles there that align with your interests
Send an email or LinkedIn message to connect
Here’s a template for a cold call message:
Subject: I’d Like to Connect
Dear [Insert Name],
I’m [introduce yourself and establish familiarity - this could be briefly explaining how you came across the connection’s page. If you have no connections, express interest in their work and establish how their accomplishments align with your goals.]
I would love to chat with you and learn more about your role and [insert a specific aspect of their experience. This could be about their career journey or their expertise. The more specific you are here, the better. Show that you did your homework!]
