Ramadan Beyond Fasting: Ways to Stay Connected

It’s happened to all of us—It’s Ramadan, we’re going strong, and then all of a sudden an unwelcome visitor comes to ruin the vibe. Periods are no fun, especially during the holiest time of the year. While it can feel like a wrench in our plans, periods don’t have to lead to spiritual distance from the blessings of the Ramadan. Read below for some practical tips to stay spiritually engaged, especially when it’s that time of the month.

1. Continue dhikr

Remember Allah throughout the day - saying “SubhanAllah”, “Alhamdulilliah” and “Allahu Akbar”. It’s an easy way to keep your heart connected all day long.

2. Listen to the Qu’ran

Follow along, reflect on its meaning, and let it deepen your connection with Allah (SWT) throughout Ramadan.

3. Make iftar for friends & family

The Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) said, “Whoever feeds a fasting person will have his sins forgiven, will be saved from hell fire, and will have the same reward as the fasting person without diminishing the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.” It can be as simple as serving dates and water to bring these blessings.

4. Listen to Islamic lectures or podcasts

Some of our favorites include Ustadh AbdelRahman Murphy’s Heartwork series and Dr. Omar Suleiman’s Ramadan series.

5. Make du’a

Even if you can’t pray, your du'as are just as meaningful—take this time to connect with Allah and ask for forgiveness and anything else in your heart.
