Brands Taking a Stance on Social Justice

The racial upheaval that shook the nation following the death of George Floyd (may he rest in peace) has prompted soul searching among people. It has raised questions on how we can do better to fight racial injustice. One way people are choosing to be an ally is by using the power of their dollar to make a statement against racial and other social injustices. A recent study by Kantar Media found that 68% of consumers expect brands to have clearly defined values and 54% expect brands to take a stance on conversations on social injustice.

Here are some Muslimah run businesses / social media personalities that have taken a stance on social justice issues:

Haute Hijab - From highlighting tips for protesting in a hijab to a halaqa unpacking racism in the Muslim community to joining the boycott of advertising on Facebook to donating to hijabs to healthcare workers in the frontlines, Haute Hijab has consistently played an active role in the fight for justice. They’ve started difficult conversations about issues that affect the Muslim community and have even called out influencers for performative allyship.

Nominal - Since its inception, Nominal has sought to create fashion forward accessories and also make a meaningful impact in the world. Through their Deed of the Month program, they’ve highlighted and donated to a different cause every month. Transparency is key with the brand and donation receipts are easily accessible on their website.

Spiced Nice - Run by Farrah Jalanbo, the account features easy to follow detailed recipes. Following the death of George Floyd, she announced she was selling her garlic sauce for a limited time with 100% of profits going towards the Black Lives Matter movement.

MahnJaan Decorates - Along with delectable cupcakes and other sweet treats, Mahnoor Ahmad has shared resources to support the Black Lives Matter movement. She has also created cookie care packages to show appreciation for those in the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic and to support those affected by the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

Knafeh Queens - An MWP favorite, Knafeh Queens has raised awareness and supported the Black Lives Matter movement. The mother daughter duo have also raised funds for Yemen and consistently support Muslim run non profits in Southern California. They are currently raising awareness on vote by mail and demanding a well funded USPS, which many small businesses rely on.
